Of the many stars in Filipino comics, Gerry Alanguilan's name shines with boundless creativity, undeniable talent, and an unwavering passion for storytelling. Part of the Philippine's comics renaissance (1990s-2000s), he inspired generations of comic book enthusiasts around the world.
Gerry Alanguilan was always ready to share his infectious smile.
Alanguilan started drawing at a very young age, flitting between architecture and his true calling as a comic book artist. After decades working in superhero comics for the likes of Marvel and DC, Alanguilan first garnered widespread international attention with "Elmer," a thought-provoking story about chickens gaining human-level intelligence. This story that captivated audiences with its breathtaking artwork and narrative nuance, eventually garnered Alanguilan an Eisner nomination, and solidified his storytelling chops as a comics creator.
Beyond comics, Alanguilan tirelessly advocated for his fellow Filipino comic creators and their works. His work in San Pablo saw the creation of the Philippine's first comic convention outside of Manila. From the importance of supporting local creators, to developing a thriving comic book community in the Philippines, his passion for comics and creatives alike earned him high praise from both fans and colleagues worldwide.
His passing in 2019 left a tremendous void in Filipino comics, but the legacy he left behind with his comics and advocacy work will never be forgotten. We hope to see his passion of celebrating and supporting Filipino comics continue through all those he inspired throughout his life.
Fans of Marvel comics might recognize his work in X-Men, Wolverine, and Fantastic Four. Take a glance through some of these titles, and let us know which one was your first encounter with Gerry Alanguilan's work: https://www.marvel.com/comics/creators/8542/gerry_alanguilan
