Spotlight: Steve Gan, Co-Creator of Star-Lord

By Dastan Bhutani

Few names in the world of comic books have the same effect as Steve Gan’s. Throughout his extensive forty-year career Steve Gan has garnered admiration, not only for his outstanding art, but also for his unwavering dedication to elevating his fellow Filipino creatives. Born to Chinese parents and raised in the Philippines, Gan developed a passion for art at a young age. He began his journey in the world of fine art and illustration but everything changed when he discovered a deep passion for comics. Gan's rise to success began when he was noticed by Tony DeZuniga, who was, himself, a successful Filipino editor and illustrator, and subsequently introduced to the American comic book industry.

When Steve Gan started contributing to Marvel Comics in the 1970s, his career took a drastic turn. The character, Star-Lord, which he co-created with writer Steve Englehart, was perhaps his single greatest accomplishment. Star-Lord made his debut in "Marvel Preview" Issue 4 in 1976 and went on to play a major role in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe well over three decades later. Gan stamped his mark on the classic image of the cosmic adventurer which, combined with his extremely dynamic visual storytelling, brought attention to just how much artistic skill was available in the Philippines. This has opened doors for so many other Filipino artists. Gan frequently included aspects of Filipino culture in his works, whether they were conceptual, visual, or derived from character backstories. The rich legacy and culture of the Philippines were suddenly more available than ever to audiences around the world.

Beyond his involvement with Marvel, Steve Gan has had a major impact on the traditional comic book industry in the Philippines, where they are known as "komiks." He collaborated with well-known Filipino authors and artists to produce tales that spoke to the community, such as one of his most notable creations. Co-created with writer Carlos J Caparas, The Panday is a fictional Philippine comic character who, like Gan’s other popular creation, took to the silver screen in multiple well-received movies. Gan's ability to adapt his approach to various genres and narratives was made apparent by his work with komiks. To this day, his work continues to have an impact on and motivate waves of new Filipino artists.

Steve Gan's journey is one of passion, determination, and creativity—from a young artist in the Philippines to a globally recognized comic book creator. His contributions to the comic book industry have had a lasting impact and his legacy continues to inspire creators everywhere. For many decades to come, Steve Gan's accomplishments will be celebrated in both Filipino and international comics.
